Answer

Is one dog year seven human years?

No: a dog’s first year equals about 15 human years, its second about 9 more, and each year after that about 4 to 7 depending on size, so a 7-year-old medium dog is about 47, not 49.

The ×7 rule makes young dogs far too young (a 1-year-old dog is sexually mature, more like a teenager than a 7-year-old child) and makes old small dogs too old.

Where the ×7 idea came from

It’s a rough average: many dogs live 10 to 13 years and many people about 70 to 80, a ratio near 7. Averages hide how fast dogs mature in the first two years and how size changes ageing later.

How do I convert my dog’s age?

Use the size-based chart: 15 at one, 24 at two, then 4 to 7 per year by size. Our calculator does it for any age.

What does the DNA research say?

A 2020 study of 104 Labradors proposed human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31, which ages young dogs even faster than the chart.

How old is a 3-year-old dog in human years?

About 28 for a small dog and 32 for a giant breed.

How old is a 7-year-old dog in human years?

About 47 for a medium dog, not 49.

How old is a 10-year-old dog in human years?

About 56 for a small dog and 78 for a giant breed.

Do small dogs age slower than big dogs?

After the first two years, yes: small dogs add about 4 human years a year and giant breeds about 7 or more.

Is the 7-year rule ever right?

Only roughly, for a medium dog around 8 to 10 years old; it is wrong for puppies and for small and giant dogs.

Where does the size-based chart come from?

It is the chart US veterinary groups publish (AAHA figures), which our dog age calculator uses.
