Dog crate, collar, harness and bed size calculator
Measure your dog nose to tail base and floor to head, and add about 4 inches to each: a dog 30 in long and 22 in tall needs a 36-inch crate. For a collar add 2 in to the neck; for a bed add 8–12 in to the length.

How to measure your dog
- Length: with your dog standing, from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail (not the tip).
- Height: with your dog sitting, from the floor to the top of the head or ear tips, whichever is higher.
- Neck: around the neck where the collar sits, snug but not tight.
- Chest (girth): around the widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs.
Questions
What size crate does my dog need?
One about 4 inches longer and taller than your dog: a dog measuring 30 in from nose to tail base and 22 in tall sitting needs a 36-inch crate at least 26 in high inside.
Can a crate be too big?
For house-training, yes: a puppy may use one end as a toilet. Buy for adult size and use a divider panel while your puppy grows.
How do I find my dog’s collar size?
Measure the neck where the collar sits and add 2 inches, so two fingers fit under the collar; choose a collar whose adjustable range includes that number.
How do I find my dog’s harness size?
Measure the widest part of the chest behind the front legs and choose the harness size whose chest range covers that measurement plus about 2 inches. Brand charts differ, so check theirs.
What size bed does my dog need?
Add 8 to 12 inches to your dog’s nose-to-tail-base length; dogs that sleep stretched out need the upper end, curlers the lower.
What size crate for a 50 lb dog?
Measure rather than go by weight: dogs of the same weight differ a lot in length. Add 4 inches to its nose-to-tail-base length and pick the next crate size up.
Should a dog be able to stand up in its crate?
Yes: it should stand without ducking, turn around and lie flat, which is why the height rule adds about 4 inches to its sitting height.
How tight should a dog collar be?
Snug enough that it can’t slip over the ears, loose enough to slide two fingers under it.

- Measurement rules of thumb used across makers’ size guides: crate = dog length + about 4 in; collar = neck + 2 in (two fingers); harness = chest + about 2 in; bed = length + 8–12 in. Always compare with your brand’s chart.
