The puppy percentages come from a raw-food retailer’s feeding guide, not a veterinary body: use them as a starting point and let your vet check growth.

Percent rule or calories?

The percent rule ignores how rich the food is. If your raw food lists kcal per kg, the calculator also works out grams from calories, using the same method as our dog food calculator. The two answers can differ; start between them and adjust to body shape.

How much raw food should a puppy eat?

A share of its current weight that falls with age, from about 10% at 8–10 weeks to 3% at 56–68 weeks: a 20 lb puppy at 12 weeks eats about 726 g a day.

Is it 2% or 3% of body weight?

Watch body shape: you should feel the ribs easily and see a waist. Adjust by about 10% and recheck after two to three weeks.

Is raw food safe for dogs?

Raw meat can carry Salmonella and Listeria; the FDA, CDC and AVMA advise against raw meat diets for pets, so talk to your vet first and handle it like raw meat for people.

Does the calculator work for homemade raw diets?

The amounts do, but a homemade diet must be complete and balanced; ask a veterinary nutritionist to check the recipe.

Raw and kibble together: how much of each?

Split the day’s calories: for example, half from raw (half the raw grams) and half from kibble (half the cups from the dog food calculator).
