Puppy growth chart: how much should my puppy weigh?

A puppy typically reaches about half its adult weight at 4 to 6 months: in our curves a medium dog that will weigh 40 lb as an adult is about 17 lb at 16 weeks and 30 lb at 28 weeks.

How to use the chart

Find your puppy’s expected adult size and age, then compare. Or go the other way: divide today’s weight by the share of adult weight for its age in the puppy weight calculator to estimate adult weight.

More questions

Is my puppy underweight?

A chart can’t say: body condition (ribs easy to feel, a visible waist) matters more than the number. Ask your vet.

When do puppies grow the fastest?

In the first four to five months: the curves’ steepest point is around 15 weeks for small breeds and 20 to 23 weeks for large ones.

How much should a 16-week-old puppy weigh?

About 43% of its adult weight for a medium breed: 17 lb for a dog that will be 40 lb.

How much should a 6-month-old puppy weigh?

Around 71% of adult weight for a medium breed on our curves: 28 lb for a future 40 lb dog.

What percent of adult weight is a puppy at 8 weeks?

About 28% for small breeds and 16% for large breeds on our curves, though early estimates are the least reliable.

Do males and females grow differently?

Yes, males usually grow faster and end heavier, which is why published growth charts are often split by sex.

Is a growth chart the same as a weight chart?

No: a growth chart shows weight over age for a growing puppy; an adult weight chart shows the target range for a grown dog of a breed.

When should I weigh my puppy?

Weekly or every two weeks at the same time of day; a smooth curve matters more than any single number.
